Leap of Faith

The power of trusting your instincts and taking calculated risks when everything seems uncertain

The year is 2015.

I still remember the day when the world seemed to crumble beneath my feet. My father, my rock, and my support system had passed away suddenly, leaving me with a whirlwind of emotions and an uncertain future.

As a university student at the time, I had to find a way to navigate the uncharted waters of grief while also managing the mounting financial pressures that came with his absence.

Determined to continue my education, I conceived the idea to take on a part-time job to make ends meet.

The balance between work and school was a delicate dance, and despite my best efforts, my grades took a hit.

I knew I had to take a leap of faith and trust my instincts to find a way to turn my situation around.

I found myself struggling to land an internship in the competitive field of software engineering. With a less-than-stellar academic record and limited professional experience, I knew I had to make a bold move.

That’s when I turned to my Uncle for support, and through his connections, I was offered a chance to prove myself at a reputable tech company.

Fuelled by determination and gratitude, I made the difficult decision to offer my services for free for six months, hoping to gain valuable experience and demonstrate my commitment to learning.

Every day, I commuted back and forth from school to work, nudged by the dream of a better future and the desire to make the most of the opportunity at hand.

The journey was anything but easy, yet I was determined to persevere. I poured my heart and soul into every project, learning from my colleagues and honing my skills as a software engineer.

The long hours and sacrifices began to pay off, as my work started to be recognised and valued within the company.

The Breakthrough

Oh my goodness, I can hardly contain my excitement!

After six long and grueling months, my internship had finally come to an end. But instead of resting on my laurels, I plunged headfirst into studying for my exams.

Every single night, I poured my heart and soul into applying for jobs on LinkedIn, feverishly sending out 3–4 applications before drifting off to sleep.

Then, just when I thought I couldn’t handle the suspense any longer, it happened:

I landed an interview!

And even better, I was offered a position as a Junior Web Developer with a fantastic agency, starting in 2016.

It was like all of my wildest dreams had come true in one fell swoop.

The Doubt

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing from there.

During my probation period, I found myself grappling with imposter syndrome and struggling to believe in my own abilities. I was constantly worried about whether I was doing enough to keep my job, and it was hard to stay focused on my studies when I was so consumed by anxiety.

Thankfully, I had an amazing support system in the form of my manager and team members.

They believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself, and they helped me grow and gain confidence in my work.

As time went on, I started to feel like I belonged — like I was truly part of the team.

The Victory

And then, to top it all off, I completed my schooling and was promoted to a mid-level developer.

I couldn’t have been more proud of myself if I tried! All the hard work and late nights paid off in the end, and I was filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude.

Reflections

As I reflect on this challenging period in my life, I realised that taking that leap of faith and trusting my instincts was instrumental in shaping the person I am today.

The calculated risks I took, from balancing work and school to offering my services for free, laid the foundation for my software engineering career and taught me invaluable lessons about:

  • Resilience
  • Determination
  • Growth

Now, as I continue to climb the ladder of success, I am eternally grateful for the support of my family, friends, and mentors who have guided me along the way.

(I wish I could name you all, however, I know you know who you are.)

My story is a testament to the power of trusting your instincts and taking calculated risks in the face of adversity. It serves as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always a glimmer of hope, and with unwavering determination, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve our dreams.

My journey has taught me that life is full of unexpected twists and turns, yet it is our response to these challenges that ultimately shape our destiny.

By embracing the spirit of “Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained,” we can take control of our own stories, learn from our experiences, and turn adversity into opportunities for growth and success.

Your Turn

As I continue to venture into the unknown and pursue my passions, I carry with me the lessons I’ve learned and the unwavering belief that when we dare to take a leap of faith, the possibilities are truly endless.

And so, I encourage you to:

  1. Take your own leap of faith
  2. Trust your instincts
  3. Embrace the challenges that come your way

For it is through venturing into the unknown that we discover our true potential and unlock the doors to a brighter future.

Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained.
